DESIGNS of KOREAN EMBROIDERY
It’s been 32 years since I began Korean embroidery in 1990. In those years, I’ve deepened my knowledge and techniques by learning from several teachers and by pursuing a master’s degree. With that base, I opened Needlestudio in 2010 and held classes while working to modernize Korean embroidery. I realized in the modernizing process that templates are a great necessity, and spent a long period of time developing this realization.
<Designs of Korean Embroidery> is a collection of templates that are staples of Korean embroidery and of those I’ve personally designed. It is put together in the hopes to assist all Korean embroidery enthusiasts, and to be further utilized across various art fields.
Junghye Han (Eileen Han)
Originally dreaming of becoming a pianist, Han, Junghye fell in love with the beauty of a red embroidered pouch she saw one day. She went to learn the embroidery because she wanted to gift her first born daughter one she made herself. That was the beginning of her ties with Korean embroidery and time only deepened the relationship sparked by the red pouch. Later in 2005, she had an opportunity to exhibit at Korean Culture Center in Washington D.C. under the name while she was living in U.S.A. Her passion to spread Korean embroidery grew with this experience.
After coming back to Korea, she continued her studies at Konkuk University Graduate School of Art and Design, and received her M.F.A. with the thesis, 『Study of the embroidery patterns and techniques of the Hwarot of Princess Bokon』. Since then, she has opened Needle Studio and has been constantly producing work whilst endeavoring to modernize Korean embroidery.
